Why Perth plumbers lose their best jobs after hours

Burst pipes and blocked drains do not wait for business hours, and after-hours rates run 1.5 to 2 times standard, so the calls most likely to be missed are the ones that pay best. This guide breaks down all nine bottlenecks, with 2026 Perth job values against each.

Key takeaways

  • Your best-paying calls arrive when nobody is answering. Emergencies land in the evening and over the weekend, and after-hours rates run 1.5 to 2 times standard.[2]
  • A missed call is a lost job, not a delayed one. Most callers who hit a voicemail hang up, and most of those never ring back.
  • Speed beats price and reputation. In an emergency the customer keeps dialling until someone picks up, and the job goes to whoever answers.
  • Perth numbers make it concrete. Emergency visits run $250 to $700, hot water replacements average around $2,400, and burst pipe repairs $400 to $950.[2]
  • The fix is triage, not a receptionist. The SMS asks whether water is actively escaping before anything wakes you. Real emergencies ring your mobile. Dripping taps get a morning booking link.

What is after-hours call automation for plumbers?

After-hours call automation sends an automatic SMS from your business number within 60 seconds of any unanswered call, then triages the job before deciding whether to wake you. The text asks whether water is actively escaping. Genuine emergencies trigger an alert to your mobile. Everything else receives a booking link for the morning. You capture the call without answering every call.

This is the distinction that matters for plumbing specifically. HVAC has a seasonal peak. Plumbing has a nightly one. A burst pipe at 11pm on a Tuesday is the highest-value job of your week and the one most likely to go to whoever picks up first. But answering everything means never sleeping, and answering nothing means handing that work to a competitor. Triage is the only version that survives contact with a real business.

The plumbing phone problem

Every stat points
the same direction.

Plumbing has the worst call economics of any trade. High urgency, low patience, and a customer who is standing in water while they scroll Google.

Perth pricing verified 2026.[2] Australian plumbing is a $22.2bn industry across 28,615 businesses, though business numbers fell 7.3% in 2025.[1] Fewer competitors, same demand, and the ones who answer the phone take the difference.

Every leak, and the fix

Nine bottlenecks
in a Perth plumbing business.

This is the full list we work through on the audit call. Most operators have four or five of these running at once and have never costed any of them.

Bottleneck 01 The after-hours void

The calls arrive outside 7am to 5pm, when nobody is anywhere near the phone, and the caller moves straight to the next Google listing.

What we build 60-second SMS capture, 24/7

Every unanswered call triggers an immediate text from your number. The customer gets a response at 11pm without you getting out of bed.

Worth $250–$700 per recovered callout
Bottleneck 02 You cannot tell an emergency from a dripping tap

So you either answer everything and never sleep, or answer nothing and lose the burst pipe job to a competitor.

What we build Emergency triage sequence

The SMS asks whether water is actively escaping, whether there is no water, or whether it can wait. Real emergencies ring your mobile. The rest book themselves in for the morning.

Stops both lost jobs and broken nights
Bottleneck 03 Quotes go out and nothing happens

You quote a bathroom reno or a hot water replacement, the customer says they will think about it, and you never follow up because you are on the tools.

What we build Automated quote follow-up

A timed sequence at day 2, day 7 and day 21. Not pushy, just present. Most plumbers never send a single follow-up, which is why this one usually pays for the whole system.

Highest ROI line item
Bottleneck 04 Your hot water database is sitting idle

Storage units last roughly 8 to 12 years. You installed hundreds of them. You have no idea which ones are due, and neither does the customer until it fails on a Sunday.

What we build Planned replacement reactivation

We campaign your install history by age. A planned replacement at $2,400 beats an emergency one, for you and for them.

Zero ad spend, list you already own
Bottleneck 05 Seasonal drain work goes uncaptured

Tree roots are the leading cause of external blockages in Perth, with jacaranda, gum and peppermint the usual offenders, and sandy soil makes it worse.[3] Demand spikes and you react instead of booking ahead.

What we build Seasonal campaign automation

Pre-winter drain campaigns to past customers in tree-heavy suburbs, before the first heavy rain rather than during it.

Fills the diary before the rush
Bottleneck 06 You have four Google reviews

Every customer who calls you checks them first. Nobody asks for reviews because it feels awkward and you have finished the job and moved on.

What we build Automated review requests

Triggered on job completion in ServiceM8, timed for a few hours later when the hot water is working again and the customer is happy.

Compounds your local pack ranking
Bottleneck 07 Minor work records live in the ute

Licensed plumbing contractors in WA must keep a record of all minor plumbing work in a format approved by the Plumbers Licensing Board.[4] For a lot of operators that means a notebook and hope.

What we build Automated job data capture

Job details captured and stored in one searchable place as work is completed. The compliance obligation stays yours, but the record stops being a shoebox.

Removes an audit-day panic
Bottleneck 08 Your SMS setup may not be compliant

Most automated SMS running in Australian trade businesses cannot produce a consent record, does not carry the business name or ABN, and has no registered Sender ID. Any one of those is a breach.

What we build Compliance built in, not bolted on

Consent captured and logged at the point of enquiry, your business name or ABN on every message, automated unsubscribe, and your Sender ID lodged on the ACMA register.

Penalties reach A$3.64m
Bottleneck 09 Double entry between systems

A lead comes in one place, gets retyped into ServiceM8, then retyped again into the invoice. Every retype is a chance to lose it.

What we build ServiceM8 or Simpro integration

Captured jobs land in the system you already run, with job type, suburb and urgency attached. No migration, nothing new to learn.

The part that matters

How triage decides
whether to wake you.

This is the difference between an automation that helps and one you switch off after a fortnight because it rang you at 2am about a slow-draining shower.

Escalates to your mobile

Emergency Burst pipe, water actively escaping

Property damage clock is running. Highest value, least price sensitive.

Emergency No water to the property

Household cannot function. Will call every plumber in Perth until someone answers.

Emergency Gas smell or suspected leak

Safety issue. Triaged with the standard safety message and immediate escalation.

Emergency Sewage backing up

Health issue, unavoidable, and nobody shops around on price at 10pm.

Books itself for the morning

Can wait Dripping tap or running toilet

Booking link sent for the next available slot. You never see it until it is in the diary.

Can wait Slow drain, no overflow

Captured, qualified, scheduled. Often upsold to a CCTV inspection at the booking stage.

Can wait Quote request for a reno

Straight into the quote follow-up sequence rather than into your voicemail.

Can wait Hot water lukewarm, still running

Booked for morning, and flagged as a likely replacement rather than a repair.

You set the thresholds, not us. Some plumbers want every after-hours call escalated because the callout premium is worth the interruption. Others only want water escaping. We tune it in the first fortnight against your real replies, not against a template.
Compare the options

Answering service, on-call roster,
or automated triage?

Every plumbing business solves after hours somehow. Most solutions cost more than people realise once you count the hours.

Voicemail On-call roster Human answering service Automated triage
Response time Next morning Depends who is awake Live if an operator is free Under 60 seconds
Filters real emergencies No Only after you have answered Reads a script, no trade judgement Before you are woken
Cost of a broken night None, you lose the job instead Paid to a person, every night Per call or per minute Only for genuine emergencies
Customer gets a written record No No No Yes, in their SMS thread
Works when you are under a house No No Takes a message Yes
Scales with call volume N/A No, it burns people out At increasing cost Flat monthly
Typical Perth cost Free Penalty rates or goodwill Per call or per minute From $999 + $197/mo

Said plainly: if you run a genuine 24/7 emergency operation with staff rostered on, a human answering service may still suit you. Automated triage is built for the owner-operator and the two-to-six van business, which is most of Perth plumbing.

The build

How to stop losing
after-hours plumbing jobs.

Five steps, fourteen days, and you touch none of it.

1
Measure your after-hours leak

We count how many calls arrive outside 7am to 5pm across two weeks, and how many were answered. Nearly every plumber underestimates this, because the unanswered ones leave no trace.

30 minutes · free
2
Lodge ACMA Sender ID registration

Your alphanumeric Sender ID goes on the ACMA register. Longest lead time in the build, so it starts immediately.

Day 1
3
Build the triage sequence

Written for plumbing specifically: water escaping, no water, no hot water, gas smell, blocked drain, quote request. Each path behaves differently, and only the genuine emergencies reach your phone.

Days 2 to 8
4
Connect ServiceM8 or Simpro

Jobs land in your existing system with urgency attached, so your morning starts with a diary rather than a missed-call list.

Days 9 to 12
5
Go live and tune the thresholds

We watch the first fortnight and adjust what counts as wake-me-now. Perth customers describe a burst pipe in about nine different ways and the sequence has to catch all of them.

Day 14

The SMS rules that actually apply to you in Australia

This is the part almost every plumbing business gets wrong, usually because someone set the SMS up years ago and nobody has looked at it since. Two separate regimes govern what you do.

Your plumbing work sits under the Plumbers Licensing Act 1995 and the Plumbers Licensing Board.[4] Your automated SMS sits under the Spam Act 2003, enforced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.[5]

ACMA can fine a company up to A$3.64 million and an individual up to A$728,000 for serious breaches. There is no small-business exemption and no grace period for not knowing. If you are sending automated texts to customers, these rules already apply to you.

The four things every message has to satisfy

Spam Act 2003 requirements, in practice
RequirementWhat it means on a jobWhere operators fail
Consent Express or inferred consent before you send. A customer who rang you about a burst pipe has given inferred consent for you to reply about that job. Bulk texting an old customer list with no record of how those numbers were obtained
Identification Every message must clearly identify your business by legal name or ABN. Messages sent from a bare mobile number with no business name in the body
Unsubscribe A working opt-out that costs no more than a standard SMS, honoured within five business days. No STOP handling at all, or replies going to a number nobody monitors
Sender ID registration Since 1 July 2026, ACMA has required every alphanumeric Sender ID to be on the SMS Sender ID Register. Registration opened on 30 November 2025. Sending under an unregistered business name, which is now a breach and increasingly gets filtered

Why the Sender ID Register matters more than people realise

Before the Sender ID Register, anyone could send a text that appeared to come from any business name. That is how the scam texts impersonating banks and toll operators worked. The register closed that gap.

For a legitimate plumbing business the practical effect is simple. From 1 July 2026, a text sent under an unregistered business name arrives with "Unverified" where your name should be, in the same pile as the scam messages. Texts sent from an ordinary phone number are not relabelled. You can be compliant on consent and identification and still lose the job because your message looked like a scam. Which of your texts it affects, and how to register.

You can do everything else right and still lose the job
because your text looked like a scam.

What we actually do about it

  1. Lodge your Sender ID on the ACMA register. This has the longest lead time of anything in a build, so it goes in on day one.
  2. Build consent capture into the point of enquiry, so every number in your system has a record attached showing where it came from.
  3. Put your business name or ABN into the template layer, so it cannot be left off a message by accident.
  4. Automate STOP handling end to end, with opt-outs actioned immediately rather than within the five days you are allowed.
  5. Keep consent logs, opt-out logs and message history in one searchable place, so an ACMA query is a five-minute job rather than a bad fortnight.
Ask any agency quoting you on SMS one question: what is your Sender ID registration process? If they cannot answer it in a sentence, they are not set up for Australia, and the risk of that sits with your ABN rather than theirs.
Questions

Plumbers ask us this.

How many plumbing calls come in after hours?
Burst pipes, blocked drains and failed hot water systems do not wait for business hours, and a good share of them land in the evening or over a weekend. Since after-hours rates typically run 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate, the calls most likely to be missed are also the most profitable ones.[2]
Do customers really call the next plumber if you do not answer?
Yes. Most callers who reach a voicemail hang up without leaving a message, and most of those never call back. In an emergency the customer keeps dialling until somebody picks up, so the job usually goes to the first plumber who gives them a straight answer. Speed beats price and it beats reputation.
How do I avoid being woken up for jobs that are not emergencies?
The automated SMS runs a triage question before anything reaches you. It asks whether water is actively escaping, whether there is no water at all, or whether it can wait. Genuine emergencies trigger a call alert to your mobile. Everything else gets a booking link for the next morning. You stop choosing between a broken night and a lost job.
What does an emergency plumber charge in Perth?
In 2026, Perth plumbers charge $84 to $210 per hour with an average near $125. Call-out fees run $63 to $160, rising to $150 to $400 after hours, and after-hours rates are typically 1.5 to 2 times standard. A full emergency visit generally lands between $250 and $700.[2]
Does it work with ServiceM8 or Simpro?
Yes, and we connect to them rather than replacing them. Captured jobs land in ServiceM8 or Simpro with job type, suburb and urgency attached. Your quoting, scheduling and invoicing stay exactly where they are, and there is nothing new for your office to learn.
Is automated SMS legal for Australian plumbing businesses?
Yes, when it is set up correctly. Automated commercial SMS in Australia is governed by the Spam Act 2003 and enforced by ACMA. You need consent you can actually evidence, clear identification of your business name or ABN in every message, and a working unsubscribe processed within five business days. Registration opened on 30 November 2025, and since 1 July 2026 every alphanumeric Sender ID must be on ACMA’s SMS Sender ID Register. Separately, Spam Act breaches carry penalties of up to A$3.64 million for a company and A$728,000 for an individual, so this is worth getting right the first time.[5]
Can it help with Plumbers Licensing Board record keeping?
Partly, and this is worth being precise about. Licensed plumbing contractors in Western Australia must keep a record of all minor plumbing work in a format approved by the Plumbers Licensing Board.[4] We can automate the capture and storage of job data so the information sits in one searchable place instead of a glovebox. We are not a licensing consultancy and the compliance obligation remains yours.
What does an engagement cost?
Setup is $999 for the three founding clients in each trade, or $1,500 after that, plus a $197 monthly platform fee, and your first 8 booked estimates are free. Ad spend is separate and paid by you straight to Google. A Perth emergency callout runs $250 to $700, so most engagements are covered by a handful of recovered jobs a month.
